Even though all references are there in the post, I just thought to include in comment as well the explicit reference to what I said above.

-------------------------------------------
Hafidhh ibn al Qayyim writes that the Prophet of Allah, (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: Send salutations on me, but send more salutations on Friday. When you recite the salutation, your voice will reach me wherever you are. Some companions asked, ” even after your death?” The Prophet, (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) replied, “Allah has made it unlawful for the earth to decompose my body”.

[Hafidhh Ibn-al-Qayyim, Jala-ul-Afhaan page 145]

Imam Nasa’i narrates that there are specific angels who visit the earth and whose sole duties are to go to the persons who sends salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad, (May Allah bless him and grant him peace), and then to take those salutations to the Prophet Muhammad, (May Allah bless him and grant him peace)

[Mishkat chapter on Salaah al Nabi]

The above mentioned Ahadith, indicate that if anyone were to send salutations to the Prophet, (May Allah bless him and grant him peace), he himself would either hear the salutations, or an angel will convey them to him. In both cases, salutations will reach the Prophet, (May Allah bless him and grant him peace).

Response:
Like many other people as mentioned, I also think the same. I believe that Prophet (SAW) is still alive. He is not as present as Allah and he is not free of time and space as Allah and he is physically present in his grave (Roza Mubarak). As I mentioned explicitly, our salutations made upon him are brought to him indirectly through angels as well as directly and he listen to them with his own physical ears.

Prophet (SAW) has no power of himself to listen to our salutations from all around the universe. It's his beloved Allah that has given him that much power.
Prophet (SAW) has no actual authority over angels but its his beloved Allah that has appointed angels for this task as well.
Allah is the only one with ultimate power and he is free of any obligations to use that power as he may like. If Allah has placed our Prophet (SAW) at such a high place and has appointed angels for him and has given him power to listen to salutations directly, who are we to differ?

If that much is clear, next part will be even easier and simple.
Allah took the Prophet to Miraaj physically. It was not the power of who is going, it was power of who brings him to Himself :)

If Allah could do it then and make him travel physically, can Allah not do that again? Can Allah not make him visit spiritually wherever He deems worthy? Who are we to question?

Its between Allah and his beloved. Our job is to send salutations upon him from the whole heart. Only Allah is to decide the place of Prophet (SAW) not us. Only Allah is to decide whether He can come to the gathering of his followers and lovers or not.

Even if he is not coming there himself, if a person is able to listen to you, will you rate him as present close or absent somewhere far far away?
THINK!!!

A very good friend of mine mentioned after reading the post that "the only point which is in my mind is that in our society there is a huge number of muslims who consider our Prophet PBUH as still alive (not dead) and they can listen to them and can reach anywhere where (mehfil e naaat & darood o salam) is being conducted".

I totally understand his point and will respond in next comment.
